Iíve just celebrated 40 years of broadcasting radio shows and itís got me thinking. Over the years I've presented shows on Inverness Hospital Radio, MFR, Radio Cracker, Nevis Radio and of course KCR 107.7 FM. Altogether the total time "on air" probably exceeded 5000 hours. Thatís a lot of talking!
Radio has changed a lot since 1978. Iíve seen the rise & "fall" of commercial radio, which was brand new to Scotland in 1974/75. By "fall" I refer to artistic standards as opposed to commercial success. Iíve also seen the introduction of community radio, and was involved with the start up of stations such as Speysound, Nevis Radio, Oban FM & Radio Caithness.
I've broadcast on KCR 107.7 FM since January 2015, three months after we secured our own radio licence. Community radio allows you to be different, challenging and unique, while commercial radio, nowadays, aims for safe, and aims at, dare I say it, the lowest common denominator. In contrast to that I will always play a wide variety of music regardless of whether or not it is "popular". Iíll also give you relevant information to go with these songs.
I still get a huge kick out of finding and sharing good music, whether brand new or in the rock classic category. Itís my intention to carry on for the next 40 years!
